An orangutan named Betty who died from pneumonia. A Sumatran tiger who was poisoned to death by meat laced with formaldehyde. A giraffe found with 20 pounds of plastic in its stomach.
The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia has been accused of all of this cruelty and neglect — and now, a lion named Michael is its newest victim.
Last week, Michael was found dead in his cage. Officials think that the lion had been playing around and gotten caught on a loose wire, effectively hanging himself. He was only 18 months old.
Though Michael’s death may have been an accident, it’s just the latest in a series of evidence that the Surabaya Zoo is a place of neglect, abuse and suffering. We have to stand against it so that no more animals are subjected to this level of harm.
Tell Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry to close the zoo immediately!
