Extend the range of the Apple remote

Follow Me on Pinterest

I have my Mac mini set up in one room, with a cable through the wall from my study to the lounge so that I can run dual screens and view the Mac mini on my TV.

Unfortunatley the Apple remote wont work through the wall, so what I am after is a “gizmo” that will extend the range of the Apple remote so that I can use it to control the Mac mini from another room – something like a USB sensor on a cable.

Twisted Melon have the Manta TR1 USB IR Transceiver in stock so I have emailed them to see if that would work on an exiting Mac with IR capabilities, but I thought I would see if anyone had any other suggestions?

Thanks

You’d love to control all of your equipment from anywhere in your home, but rewiring your house or adding extra equipment can get pricey. Problem solved: TERK’s Infrared Remote Extender is a free-standing unit that converts the infrared signals from your standard remote controls into long-range radio frequency signals, eliminating the need for additional equipment or wiring while letting you control your components from virtually anywhere in your house!

I’d use Salling Clicker on your bluetooth phone, if you’ve got one. Can’t guarantee reception, but it’s always been pretty good for me, and you can do a whole lot more with it than the apple remote.

That is a great shout thanks! I have a RAZR so that should be fine, but I do have a tendancy to leave it places :-(

Maybe I should wait and see if they bring out a real iPhone in Q1, but I guess the limitation is that you can only control via the one phone, which wouldn’t be great if I was out and my wife wanted to use it?

    Well worth a look though.

Yep, another good option. Ideally I just want a USB cable that will plug into the Mac mini and will feed through the wall and have a sensor in the lounge that will pick up the Apple Remote.

I have all the holes, trunking in place so not a big job.

Still waiting to hear back from Twisted Mellon

I have just placed an order with Twisted Melon after some great pre-sales help. I don’t know what happend to my originla email request but he says he remembers answering something similar before Xmas so it must havegot though, but the reponse got lost.

At the same time I have to say thanks to Salling Clicker who offered me a review copy. I will take them up on their offer as soon as I get a new phone – now where is that iPhone Steve!!!

I have used a simple IR Repeater to operate my Mac Mini. The solution works well and is cheap !! Maplin in the UK do a good extender :-

Thanks so much for this. I was about to buy a dedicated Mac mini for the living room, just to stop from juggling remotes, iPhones, etc. I actually had a Manta device sitting around somewhere. Now just a DVI, USB and optical cable from the iMac in my study to the TV and stereo. Combined with a Logitech Harmony remote and the twisted Melon Manta, and all works simply with one remote. This just saved me a few hundred bucks and an extra box in the living room.

Excuse me if I’m posting this in the incorrect area, but does anybody on this page know where I can find infomation on a organization in the United states advertising an IT sales employment? The business is LTJ Management, LLC located at 900 Congress Ave., Suite L-150, Austin, TX 78701 (512) 895-9500. I’m transferring to the US soon and any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
