Everyone wants a faster network. But before you can do anything to speed up yours, you must ascertain how fast it’s currently going. Yet measuring network speed isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

At first glance, the Government’s recent commitment to a universal broadband service by 2012 may sound welcome. In fact, it could be catastrophic for the communities and businesses of rural Britain. This is because the plan is to aim for a speed of two megabits per second, which looks woefully inadequate when South Korea, for example, is aiming for a universal service that runs 500 times faster.

There have been a number of articles recently around the fact that 80% of twitter accounts have less than 10 followers. While some have blamed Spammers and other ’squatters’ I reckon it may be a lot simpler than that ….

The stats that have got people debating are:

Followers
Accounts with 0 followers: 29.4%
Accounts with 1 to 9 followers: 50.9%
Accounts with 10 or more followers: 19.7%

Followings
Accounts following 0 people: 24.4%
Accounts following 1 to 9 people: 43.4%
Accounts following 10 or more people: 32.2%

Apple may have plenty of announcements of its own to make at this year’s WWDC, but it looks like it just couldn’t help itself from taking a few jabs at Microsoft as well.

When I first thought of setting up the Monarch Airlines Petition I had a look around for a online service that would allow me to integrate with the site, so that people visited the site at some stage in the process. Of all the ones that I looked at (and there aren’t many that provide this option at anything like a affordable price!) iPetitions seemed perfect on first impressions.

Oh dear what is it that they say about first impressions?!

China has blocked websites including Twitter ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, internet users have said.

If ever one article summed up the way the world has changed this could well be it!

It has been all over the news today that Google have introduced ‘time based search options’, which is pretty cool, but the article that I liked the most was the one over on mashable.com which argued that the Google announcement is very much in response to the threat of Twitter and other real-time search offerings:

Almost every computer user in the country will have access to broadband internet by 2012.

Oh if only I believed the article below in the Telegraph but I don’t trust Government to deliver on these type of promises. They sound good at the time sure, but when it comes to spending the money it is always a budget that is easy to cut.

Too little too late as well! IF they were serious about this they could have got on and done it by now!

The next version of the Bluetooth short-range wireless protocol officially launched this week, promising an eightfold speed increase to boost the low power protocol into the same performance range as WiFi wireless networking, while allowing Bluetooth 3.0 devices to fall back to lower power mode when not actively transferring data.

I read the article below on AppleInsider with a mix of thoughts.

In the country that invented the Internet, why is Net access so bad?

Seriously you should see how expensive and slow the Internet here is Spain!! Still this was an interesting read on Macworld.

I was also somewhat surprised as my experience of broadand in the US has always been better than in the UK and Spain, but it has been a while since I was last over!!!

The Internet was born and and raised in the United States. Yet—thanks to slow speeds, inconsistent availability, and bandwidth caps—we now lag the rest of the world when it comes to broadband Net access.

As Tony Blair soaked up the applause of an adoring Filipino audience at the end of his latest paid speaking engagement last month, a startling statistic must surely have popped into his head. In the space of just 30 minutes, Mr Blair had earned £183,000 – the same as his salary as prime minister.

This articl in the Telgraph has rendered me all but speachless!! The guy lies about WMD, leaves the country in a total mess, yet makes £15,894,936 since retiring to June 2009!!! To be honest I can’t see what anybody would want to listen to him for, or read his book and as for his money grabbing wfe …

Ford not Ferrari for you

Just tread in the Register that BT chief executive Ian Livingstone defended his firm’s limited plans for faster broadband today, arguing there is not enough demand for fibre to the home to justify its cost.

What a load of rubbish!!! Lok back in history my friend. If companies had waited for the demand nothing would have got invented would it. Of course we need and want faster broadband, and we want it cheaper!!! That is your challenge to provide it and make enough of us buy it. Now get on with your job!!!
