Skype on the iPhone Confirmed!

30 March 2009 46 views 6 Comments

Yes please!!! Have updated this post since first posted as a rumour on the 28th, as a number of sources now saying Skype FREE in the App Store starting Tuesday

Only a rumour, but The Register are saying that according to GigaOM, the eBay-owned service could announce an application for the iPhone as soon as next week, during the wireless CTIA tradeshow in Las Vegas that starts on 1 April.

A few months ago, I asked Skype CEO Josh Silverman when was he going to launch the iPhone version of the P2P voice and IM service that has now been downloaded more than 405 million times. He smiled and said, “Stay tuned.” And so we did.

A tipster — a very reliable one — tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

The biggest clue about Skype’s pending iPhone launch came when iSkoot decided to move on from its Skype-centric strategy. The company had been offering a client that allowed cell phone users to use Skype services. Skype already offers a Windows Mobile version of its client.

As I’ve said before, Skype will have to turn to mobile to keep its growth intact. In recent months, many services, among them Truphone and Nimbuzz, started supporting Skype in their communication clients. However, a standalone Skype client would get a lot of traction among the Skype faithful. In the meantime, I think Skype is slowly flexing its muscles and swatting away little VoIP players with some of its recent moves.

Of course the April 1st date should give you a clue as the likelihood of this happening!!!!!

That would be nice, especially if it actually worked over the 3G network, and not only wifi….

Like teethering it woud be great, but I suspect would require a Jailbroken phone, and as I said the April 1st date set the alarm bells ringing!

Well engadget seem to be saying it is coming on Tuesday!!!

It’s legit; Skype is coming to the iPhone on Tuesday, BlackBerry devices in May. While we’ve seen plenty of Skype-capable apps on the iPhone, the poor, often echo-infected calls should be easily bested by the official Skype App that doesn’t need the extra audio transcoding workaround required by the existing crop of unofficial apps. The Skype app works over WiFi only (not over EDGE or 3G data) and supports calls to SkypeOut contacts in addition to many of the other features you’ve used from the desktop client. iPod touch owners will require earphones with an embedded mic to talk. CNET has a hands-on preview of the App just as long as you can muster the energy required to hit the read link below.

Macworld are confirming at well, in the App Store, so not requiring a jailbreak!!! Oh and FREE as well!!

Skype will begin offering its Skype for iPhone application on the App Store starting Tuesday. The company will officially announce the new app at the CTIA trade show in Las Vegas.

Using Skype for iPhone, users with an iPhone, or second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone, can make free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi to other Skype users worldwide; have the ability to call landlines or mobile phone numbers (Skype calling rates apply); send and receive instant messages; receive calls to a personal online number on Skype; and see when your Skype contacts are online.

Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer, said that Skype for iPhone provides the same simplicity that the desktop app provides to its users.

Skype for iPhone will be a free download from the App Store

And it’s tomorrow, which is March 31. So well ahead of the crazy day. I’m really curious how it will work.

Bluetooth headset, or embedded mic in earphones. Bluetooth and WiFi will give you the ability to phone home, say hi and then lose the battery!!!
