@Mac - I imagine it is partly to do with the fact that like iPhone/AT&T they don't want as a telephone company to be offering a product that would reduce their core business income.

If you pay the higher monthly contract fee you can use VOiP services, just not on the Pay As You Go and lower monthly contract options.

@Max - I imagine those roaming charges would be huge!!!!
An alternative to this is the new Three Skypephone. You can buy a PAYG one for £50 and subscribing for a month on PAYG costs about £10 but ignore the call allocation - a PAYG Skypephone gives you a month's access to surf the internet subject to the usual fair use etc. You simply connect the phone and Mac by bluetooth and use the phone as your modem (there are no drivers to allow you to connect via cable from a Mac). It works well and its cheap. Oh and it charges via a USB cable so no clunky adaptor if you don't want to carry one.

In case anyone is interested its explained here http://www.3skypephone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=445

HTH
Oooops should have said the above is intended for the UK only as I imagine roaming charges would be exorbitant.

Does VOIP fall into the the fair use restrictions, or is the connection just too slow? I'm a bit surprised that they would not let you use this for VOIP. I think 3G network should be fast enough for VOIP. So why isn't it allowed?
