Photo Trip

5 February 2008 75 views 30 Comments

Long shot this but wondering if anyone fancied trying to put together a trip over to here to take some photographs, drink some beer, play some golf (well maybe not but sounds good and it is an option), geek out on Macs etc!!!!

I suggest October as weather just about perfect then, still hot and sunny but not scorching, and the holiday season is over so things are cheaper and less crowded ……

    Cool bananas :-)

    Count me in as well…. just talking with my travel agent to find out what dates. Will let you know as soon as I have them

    That is great (as you know as we have discussed it!). I reckon we should really try and get a few of the European readers (and of course anybody else) over for a long weekend while you are here. If you can make it all the way from Canada ……

    This really would be very very cool. A little photo trip, plus a blog reader meet. Wonderful.

    Lets see if we can make it happen then! As soon as you know your dates let me know and we can work around that!

    I want in!

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    Well you know you are more than welcome :-)

    According to my sources, I can book a trip starting on the 15th of October till the 23rd of October. See you all there… I hope.

    Dates are in the diary :-) Let me know when you confirm!!!!

    I’d love to, but I’m afraid my tinnitus rules out flying. And while I bought a new car just last Saturday, it’s a bit further than I’d be happy driving. According to this Google map, the return trip’s almost my average annual mileage! Does anyone know any shortcuts? :-)

    Given the number of expressions of interest already, perhaps you should change Mac’s description from “blog reader meet” to “full-blown convention”… :-)

  • Mac Sokulski said:

    That would be a nice trip though. 3 countries in a day…. You should drive out…. pick up a couple of the “blog readers” along the way, and make a proper road trip.

    > 3 countries in a day

    If I’ve got my camera gear with me – and that’s one of the reasons for attending this gathering – I’d be wanting to stop frequently to take photos. I fear that would rather delay my arrival… Nice idea otherwise. :-)

    @Chris – I just noticed that you’ve changed your permalink options… YAY!!! :D

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    @Gary – yep, had been meaning to do it for a while :-)

    @Mac – think you will find the Europeans have a different attitude to long journeys that the US/Canadians :-) The ‘long road trip’ isn’t in our culture so much BUT that is a pretty good idea, a group getting together and driving down! Train not really an option through Spain.

    IF I was driving I would do Portsmouth to Caen personally as lsightly quicker and takes out the really do part of FRance.

    Other option is the Ferry to Santander and then a drive through Spain which is a really neat drive.

  • Mac Sokulski said:

    Then you can designate, one drives one takes photos :) …. Just realized that I do your trip every 30 days just going back and forth to work!!!

  • Mac Sokulski said:

    Completely different lifestyles. North americans have to drive everywhere. Can’t walk because there are no sidewalks….. no wonder everbody is fat :)

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    @Mac – I like your tenacity!!!

    So we could broaden this out into a race as well then. Get you, Wayne and Gary to all leave at the same time and do a ‘door to door’ comparison :-)

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    And what do you do when you sit in a car driving all day – snack :-)

  • Danny said:

    Not sure about the road trip idea, but it doesnt really matter, what could be more cooler than hanging out taking photos with people with the same interests as you.

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    To be honest Road Trip not that attractive, unless 4 of you. It takes 2.5 days driving = 1500 miles of petrol, 2 nights accomodation, ferry and food. PLUS it takes 5 days of your trip allocation.

    Flights can be as little at 150€ return from Gatwick, Stanstead, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Edinburgh. Almeria airport is only 30km away, so I would suggest that you look out for cheap flights!

    If Mac goes with the dates he suggested then we are looking at the weekend of 18/19 October I reckon.

  • Wayne LeFevre said:

    @Mac – almost agree. I just wish North America had a decent train system. The train system in England may not be the best, but at least you can usually go where you want. Japan was excellent, you didn’t even need a car there.

    @Danny – Agreed!

  • Wayne LeFevre said:

    Looks like we are looking at approx $1000 for round trip! You do have some couches, right? ;)

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    @Wayne. If you get here I will sort out your accomodation!!!

  • Wayne LeFevre said:

    Looks like no HDTV this year. I think it’s going to be a trip to Spain instead!

  • Mac Sokulski said:

    @Wayne
    I think you’ll enjoy the trip more than hdtv :)
    Since you have a canon as well, I think we should sort out what lenses to take, so we can share, and not double up. What do you think?

  • Wayne LeFevre said:

    @Mac, Sure! I’ve got the one that comes with the camera. You can bring the rest. ;)

  • Mac Sokulski said:

    @Wayne sure, make me the mule…. :)

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    Careful. ‘Mule’ is the term they use here for the Moroccan drug runners :-)

    Wayne – go for it!!!!!!

  • Chris Marshall (author) said:

    So Mac emails me …………

    Flights booked
    Leaving Edmonton Oct 14 13:15
    Arriving in Almeria Oct 15 17:00

    Leaving Almeria Oct 23 7:30

    Says it all :-)
