Power Support Crystal Jacket for iPhone 3G (Clear)

If you listen to the MacReviewCast you will know that I recently discussed with Tim the purchase of a case for the iPhone that I was planning. Fundamentally I am not a fan of cases for phones, in particular the iPhone as it is such a well designed device that I can’t really see the point of hiding it away in a case.

That said it is expensive so warrants some TLC. Most of the time it is in my manbag that I carry with me or my computer bag so that tends to be all the protection it really needs, but at times I don’t carry a bag (for example when taking photos for a client that runs a off road motorcycle holiday business in spain as I have enough stuff to carry) so I needed a means of carrying the phone and protecting it. Plus the volume is really poor on the iPhone so when it is in one of the bags I am prone not to hear it ….. well that’s what I tell Sands!!!

I settled on the Power Support Crystal Jacket for iPhone 3G (Clear) at $39.95 as I really liked the versatility.

It comes with a screen protector which I don’t use. I don’t like them, can never get them to fit properly, always feel that they spoil the form factor, and …….. I lost it as soon as I got the case so it wasn’t an option to use it!!!

The case comprises of a clear plastic front and back that clips around the iPhone very securely and allows all the buttons to be used. You can charge the iPhone in this case but it wont fit into the dock which is a bit of a pain. With just the plastic cover on the form factor of the iPhone remains very good, and it doesn’t look or feel too intrusive.

The second part of the case is a black plastic holster that clips onto the case (you can’t use it with just the iPhone) and has a belt clip on the back that also opens out and swivels so that you can have the iPhone on your work surface at an angle in either portrait or landscape mode, a feature that I really like and find very useful.

When I bought the Power Support Crystal Jacket for iPhone 3G (Clear) I thought I would only use it very occasionally but have surprised myself by using it a lot more than I thought, especially with just the plastic case on.

Looks nice. At least it’s clear, and if you have a Gelaskin like I do, than you can see it and protect your iPod at the same time. My iPod Touch without the Gelaskin of Dr. Gonzo by Ralph Steadman would make it feel naked!

My absolute favorite cover, though, has got to be the Vaja cases. Mine is the SP for the iPod Touch. They are all leather, handcrafted, a little expensive, and take over a month each to make. I wouldn’t let mine wear anything else.

My 2nd generation iPod Touch (which I bought the lunchtime after Steve announced them) goes in and out my trouser pocket every day. No case, cover or anything else. I was a little nervous a first, but now probably wouldn’t have it any other way.

Both Sands iPhone and my iPhone live outside of a case most of the time (until recently in my case!!!) and they are both fine.

The prime reason for me getting a case was the need to carry the phone without a bag and be able to hear it ring when in the mountains. Got to remember that a lot of the year I am wearing shorts with no pockets in them šŸ™‚

Hmmmm… I think I shall patent “shorts with pockets in them”! Sounds like I should be able to make a fortune, at least in the south of Spain… šŸ˜‰

That’s why I like the Gelaskin so much. Some, I guess, think it’s sacrilege to put anything on your Apple product. To each his own.
And no, not really posh, just a bit of a mindset of The Apple itself. I personally think that it’s worth paying a little bit more for quality – when I can afford it!
