Sony unveils internet-enabled TVs

It means people will no longer have to huddle around a computer or laptop whenever they want to watch a video clip on YouTube or watch a television show they missed.

The Bravia Internet Video range will initially bring Five’s cath-up television service, Demand Five, to TVs, along with video websites such as Daily Motion and YouTube. If successful, the trial might be extended to other broadcasters and websites, including perhaps the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up television service.

“Consumers are increasingly enjoying more on-demand video online”, said Nicholas Barendson, a marketing executive for Sony. “However, watching full length TV programmes on a PC, hunched over a screen can be a solitary experience. Bringing these services to the TV allows consumers to share these viewing experiences with a greater degree of ease and simplicity”.

Internet Video will also be available on other Sony products, such as Blu-ray DVD players and home cinema systems.

Some Sony televisions will also feature an integrated satellite receiver, enabling viewers to pick up Freesat, the free-to-air satellite television service, without the need for an additional set-top box cluttering up their living room.

Sony also confirmed that its PlayStation Network Video Delivery service will be rolled out in the UK in November, allowing people to download movies directly to their PlayStation 3 or PSP games console, and share the content between those devices. (Via Telegraph)
