iPhone Modem

Anyone used iPhoneModem ($9.99) on a Jailbroken 2.1 iPhone?

You should, if you are at all interested in using your iPhone (and more importantly it’s data plan) as a modem on your Notebook when you are out of WiFi coverage, or don’t want to pay WiFi charges.

It is still in it’s Beta phase at the moment, and is unsupported by Apple, but it is easy enough to use and good enough for most day to day use.

You will need to Jailbreak your iPhone and download the application from Cydia, and you should also download the helper application, either off their site or if you want then here.

Flash Optimizer for Mac 2.1

Following on from the Flash Decompiler Trillix for Mac 3.1 feature I have the Flash Optimizer for Mac 2.1 ($99.95) to feature and offer one license for. As before if you want the license leave a comment, email or IM me.

Flash Optimizer for Mac is a powerful, feature-rich SWF compression utility. It easily reduces SWF files size up to 80% thanks to amazing algorithms of vectors, shapes, morphing, Z-buffer, fonts and other optimizations, thus saving considerable amount of traffic and loading time. Unlike any other similar software it manages to optimize not only a separate part of your Flash movie, but the whole SWF, including curves, zero-objects, ZLib optimization and a whole lot more advanced techniques. More than 50 separate compression options, both predefined and customizable, give you full control over the optimization process, meeting an optimum compression at no quality loss.

AM Micro intros Hi-Gain Wireless-G Dish Network Adapter for the Mac

It’s nice to see some technology directed at Mac users during CES. AM Micro has introduced the HWU8DDA, which is the Hi-Gain Wireless-G Dish Network Adapter for a Mac user and will allow you to connect your Mac to any Wireless-B, Wireless-G, or Wireless-N network by USB.

The Hi-Gain directional dish will pick up the strongest signal in the area, and at the same time extends the connection distance by up to 300%. Costing around $138.00, the package includes a CD, USB cable, manual, Hi-Gain Wireless-G USB Network Adapter and installation guide but unfortunately no handy excuses to give when you are caught ‘borrowing’ someone else’s wireless network!

Pre Launch look at MacCreative

I have been looking at a great new site this week called MacCreative which is a new creative resource site for Apple users. The aim of the site is to bring together a range of tutorials, applications, plugins and research sites focused on the digital creative technologies. The site has a slight bias on the Moving Image Arts such as film making and animation production but photographers and designers should find the site of equal benefit.

As well as Mac specific resources the site aims to list additional professional support resources such as creative bodies, film and media competitions and the various film institutes from around the world.

20MacApps Pre-Launch Event

I know that you all like a good deal when you see one, especially when it comes to (heavily) discounted Mac application, so this may be of interest to you. The really interesting ‘twist’ on this initiative is that they are having all the applications and games devloped specifically for this promotion.

At least you know that you wont already have them, although I think you will have to accept a few early release issues along the way.

DEVONtechnologies Updates for Leopard

DEVONtechnologies, LLC releases updates for all editions of its smart document manager DEVONthink as well as for its intelligent Internet search agent DEVONagent and its personal notebook application DEVONnote. The updates solve incompatibilities with Mac OS X 10.5 ‘Leopard’ and bring additional functionality.

DEVONthink

This is the third of the features that I will be writing as part of the DEVONtechnologies sponsorship of my segment on The MacReviewCast.

Don’t forget that as a listener to the show, or a reader of this blog you can get 25% off any of their products – just look out for the link in the sidebar.

Just to be clear this is a feature not a review. As I have in effect been paid for this I am not giving you my opinion or the application a rating. I am giving you the information on the application so that you can make up your own mind.

McNucle Server Software Update

I wanted to give you a quick update on the McNucle Server Software that I reviewed a while ago.

They have just released a new version with one significant new feature – the ability to share folders on your Mac as a webpage. Previously the Nucle Browser was required to be able to access your shared files over the internet.

If you want to see a demo or get more information follow the links

BitClamp Preview

BitClamp ($20) is the first application from regular reader Daniel Greg’s new company Crimson Sky Software.

BitClamp is a very easy to use, elegantly designed application, that simply allows you to encrypt and decrypt files.

What is Encryption?

Encryption is one of those things that you probably don’t know that you need until it is too late. It is also one of those things that you don’t really want to know about as it tends to allude to secret or sinister file content, and at the very least it appears on the surface to be a maize of algorithms, options and processes.

TuneBar 3 Beta

I have written about TuneBar before, most recently TuneBar 2.7, and as you know it is developed by regular reader Tom, who also happens to be my ‘partner in crime’ on a number of design and development projects.

Impressively TuneBar 2.7 is currently siting at number 6 in the Apple downloads list as a staff pick.

I have been keeping an eye on the development of Tunebar 3, and recently have been using the beta, and I must say that it has taken over where 2.7 left off and is looking very very cool!
