New Blogging Gig

As you know I am on a ‘mission‘ to generate funds to purchase the (much) desired Mac Pro.

At the same time as I released Version 3.0, I said that I had considered running two blogs, as although I wanted to keep reviewing a range of Mac Apps I wasn’t sure how well they would fit with the other additions and directions of this site.

I also wanted to make sure that in my search for funds I didn’t compromise the values of my own site, or do something that I didn’t believe in. Basically – I am not chasing any old source of funds!

AppsForMacs

This is a new site that has recently launched that I have recently taken a contract with, to fulfill the role of Executive Editor. As the name suggests AppsForMacs is ‘yet another’ site reviewing Mac applications, but with a very interesting twist.

In addition to publishing reviews, they are also publishing information of new releases direct from the developers and giving the readers the opportunity to submit a request for a free license in return for a review. Each month one review will be selected as ‘Review of the Month” based on input from developers, comments left, and Executive Editors judgment. The winner gets to chose a free application from those available and gets recognition on the site on the Review of the Month ‘board’.

What am I doing? Well in addition to some initial advisory input and help with the initial content, I will be submitting some reviews and articles and helping the reviewers to develop their skills. It is the last bit that excites me the most, the opportunity to help some new (or potential) bloggers to get the opportunity to develop their skills and exposure.

The combination of developers and reviewers is an intriguing one and it will be interesting to see how that develops.

Hi Chris – that looks interesting. I’ve added the new site’s RSS feed in beside the one for this site and will see how it develops. I might even be interested in throwing my towel into the ring and “having a shot” at reviewing at some point.
    Good luck!

Book marked as well. So does that mean no more reviews here?

Nope – I will still do reviews here. As I do now, as and when something attracts my attention I will review it – that is a personal choice.

With AppsForMacs I will do reviews for them on a different basis – as they are paying me I will review items that they want to have reviewed.

And I will continue to review items for Tim that he asks me to review under the agreement that I have with him.

So look at it this way: Business = Surfbits, AppsForMacs; Personal = This site.

That’s going to be a lot of reviews…. no more pubs, no more beaches, no more photos.

Nah – always have time for that!!! The Almerimar Life blog gets me out and about doing that.

I think I may have created a Catch 22 though – I need to blog and work more to fund the Mac Pro ………. and then I will need to blog and work more to use the Mac Pro, whereas I could just keep what I have and maintain the status quo, hmmm – think my logic chip was a bit drunk still when I came up with this plan.

But with the Mac Pro you’ll be doing it in quarter of the time, so there is some logic to this 🙂

Who’s behind this new site? Their “About” page is totally non-committal on the subject.
Maybe you could suggest to them that they add a little more detail to their About page – assuming it’s just an oversight… 🙂

They don’t have an “About” page. It is owned and run by Ashley Cooper in Australia.

I will pass your suggestion on but as it is effectively a professional blog not a personal blog I don’t think there is that much of interest to tell 🙂

Hmm. Seems a lot like a site I started a few months ago… oh, what’s the name of that site… oh yea, MacApper 😉

That’s the same guy who wanted a piece of MacApper, but I guess decided to go start his own site.

    Hi Chris

    > They don’t have an “About page.

Actually, they do – but currently you can only access it (as far as I can tell) from the front page. I contacted them about it (and a couple of other wee things) earlier.

Australian, eh? He doesn’t type with a funny accent… 🙂

In case you were wondering, there wasn’t anything in particular about which I was suspicious. I was just curious…

As for being a professional site, I’m not sure that isn’t more reason for a bit of identity.

Well so there is!! And it should now read a little differently. It is accessible via the footer rather than the Navigational bar.

Thanks for pointing that out to me 🙂

Short but sweet! Am no longer involved – to be honest was sold a bit of a line here, seems like the funds weren’t in place for the initial 3 months and the sites expectation was that after only a couple of weeks, a few new reviews etc the site would be popular overnight. If only it was that easy!

Still – gives me more time to focus on my priorities:

    This site for personal pleasure
Almerimar Life for longer term plans
Appletell and Gadgetell to pay the bills.
