The Devil Wears Prada

A perfect film for the end of Boxing day as it requires no brain power at all and a large amount of wine! The Devil Wears Prada is actually not bad at all – well acted, believable as it is based on the fashion industry (in case you didn’t pick that up from the title) and a good enough way to kill an hour and a half at the end of the Christmas excess.

I’ve watched a couple of films in the hols.

“Babel” was really good, though subtitles would have helped from time to time for the foreign dialogue.

The Girl With the Pearl Earring too is excellent. Ever since I was a kid, the painter Vermeer has been one of my very favourites. It is all about light with him. Very subtle. This is a film about one of his paintings. Lovely

Tonight I watched a quirky but lovely film by Bertolucci called ‘Besieged’.

(Unfortunately when I bought it, it was available only as a region 1 dvd so it plays on only one machine. I tried ripping it using Mac the Ripper to convert it to any region but that didn’t work. What is this region thing about?? It is so stupid. A CD works everywhere as would an LP. What is the big deal with DVDs. In my opinion, it encourages piracy as there seems to be no legal means to watch legally bought media without jumping through hoops. Why for example is there a limit of 4 changes to region playback on computers? It is nonsense)

    Have you tried Handbrake?

Am with you on the whole region thing. Funnily in the old days it wasn’t that big an issue as you just used a chipped DVD but now you want to use your Mac it is more of a problem. Is one reason why I rip everything to Mac.

I ripped it with Mac the ripper but there was a message saying there was a bad sector and that it may not work. I tried to convert the video_ts file with handbrake but it couldn’t do it. I also tried Visual Hub but that didn’t work either. I may just have to see if it is available in region 2.

Chris, I know it is possible to play Video_TS files on a mac but how?

Speak of the Devil (wearing Prada or otherwise), guess what is on BBC 2 tomorrow night…

The Girl With the Pearl Earring! I don’t know if you have some satellite tv arrangement Chris but if you can get BBC 2 it is on around 21:30h

You should be able to play file by opening DVD player and File>Open and navigate to that file.

Thanks for the heads up on film. Is now in the Sky+ planner

I believe the regions were “invented” so some of the movies that came out on DVD in one area were still playing in theaters in the other area. Take Mr. Bean’s Vacation. It was being released on dvd in UK, and almost at the same time it had a premiere in the theaters here.
Completely agree that it is very very silly idea, that is why all my DVD players are region free players. I can’t stand not being able to watch movies as I like them when I like them.
    That’s me though….

    Thanks for the explanations guys.

Why though would anyone want to watch a Mr Bean film? haha

The first wasn’t very good, but the last Mr. Bean movie was great. I mourn the passing of Mr. Bean though…. according to Rowan Atkinson this is it for Mr. Bean. Sad really.
