Finally found time to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last night. I was amazed when I first heard that Jackson had managed to turn the book into a trilogy of three hour films, with my initial reaction being that they must have more stuffing than a Turkey at Christmas.
Having watched it last night my initial reaction was correct. It was enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but watching it I had two observations: 1) it felt more like a video game than a movie with the amount of CGI and 2) it felt unnecessarily long. Not just in part but throughout. The whole thing needed a fast forward button.
And while I am being negative I really don’t like this once a year trilogy thing. Maybe I am too old now and afraid that I wont remember a) what I watched before and b) to watch them in the future but my view is pretty simple: if I sit down to watch a three movie I require a beginning, a middle and an end!
I seem to recall watching the first of the Phillip Pullman books as a movie a couple of years ago (Northern Lights) with Daniel Craig and more recently the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (again with DC). Don’t recall any follow ups being made of either so what a waste of time watching those was.

i watched 15 mins and couldnt stand it ! and yet i loved all the others in the lord of the rings ,the book was the shortest and the story very simple it was madness to make 3 films all filling and just to get more money ! the original films of the girl with the dragon tattoo were amazing with sub titles did you watch them ? 🙂 thats my 10 pennys worth haha !
Loved the original Dragon trilogy, got it on Blue Ray.

As a massive Tolkien fan, i waited for this with baited breath, and like you, I was somewhat disappointed,The Hobbit was an active paced novel, so what on earth would make anyone try to ‘drag it out’ into 3 films. The bigger question to me however still remains, why do this to the hobbit, when you completely butcher, hack and bastardise LOTR??
I think it had to be one of the most boring films I have
ever laid my eyes on! I don’t mean to be rude but really, something is way
better than this.
