So what you think? I have just got back from a night out with Sands and downloaded the update while we were out. I like the functionality but not sure about the overall UI? I really liked the old UI and I sort of feel that the ‘box’ on the main screen has ‘beta’ written all over it.
What your views?

Is there anything you like about that thing? Maybe you ought to just ship it away somewhere. The farther, the better! π
Well I’ve just discovered that you can use the Apple TV as a remote set of speakers via iTunes, this addresses two problems for me, firstly the Music UI within Apple TV sucks so I no longer need to use it and secondly iLike has never registered songs played on the Apple TV.
Now with ‘Take 2’ I use Apple TV just for Video (which it does just fine, especially HD podcasts) and have gone back to using the iMac to control my music which outputs to the Apple TV/Surround-Sound DVD Audio System.
Superb! π
Totally agree with Chris. I just can’t see what the hoopla is about. The main menu is different, but everything else is just as it was. There are some improvements like updated Parental Control section, where the movie ratings actually work now (good with kids around). Still can’t search my movie library, which is kind of pointless, searching music shows everything from my music to itunes stuff…. which is a bit confusing. The photo additions of flickr, and .mac albums is nice, but nothing spectacular. Canadians as the whole world can’t rent movies yet, so can’t comment on that. Overall I’m not impressed at all.
@Wayne – you forget that I rated the AppleTV as one of my Top 5 buys of 2007. I really like what it does. My comment was really that the UI wasn’t that great.
Go buy your own!!!!!
@David – so it does. Great shout π
After only a short time with the Apple TV Take 2, I see it as a major game changer. To save repeating myself!:

@Chris, ah yes, so it was. Mea Culpa. I’d go down and buy it today if it wasn’t for that darn HD requirement. (plus, I’m really looking forward to saving my money to go see some friends overseas this fallΓ’β¬Β¦ π )
Oh, I wanted to ask, when you ripped all your movies, did you rip them for the AppleTV? I’m in a quandary now. Now that I have my iPod Touch, I’m torn between ripping them for the AppleTV, with the higher bit rate and larger screen, and the iPod, just in case I ever wanted to take it with me.
Hi Don! π Glad to see you!
@Don – yep, I like what it does, just not a big fan of how that front page looks π
@Wayne – all ripped to AppleTV. Not ideal when viewing on B&O TV, but couldn’t face having to do them all again in the future so bit the bullet and went with the format that I would use most in the future. Plus I don’t really watch films on the iPhone. In fact I have never watched a film on the iPhone π
Me either, though I have watched a few TV shows and have streamed some from the eyeTV.
Actually, I was more looking toward watching on the big screen from my iPod, if I ever needed to. (With the fancy $50 cable.) Can’t think of a reason why, just a big IF. π
@Don. You in Manchester or Liverpool area?
Me? I’m in the Liverpool area! Why do you ask?
Because my niece is at Liverpool University, my wifes sister lives in Norley (Cheshire) my wifes mother lives in Formby and I think that when I fly to Dubai in the future rather than sit for 6 hours in the airport I am going to stay overnight and so maybe will get a chance to catch up π
I dont own an Apple TV myself but from what I’ve read it sounds to me that it is the way forward for movies. After I read this post I went searching for screenshots of the UI, I actually thought the UI looked really nice from what i could see. I was expecting it to look not much like the previous style after what you said Chris. The main menu looks to my taste too. Companies seem to be working towards the most user friendly software these days i find.
But people have their own tastes xD
Thom.
