DEVONthink 2.0 Update

As you may already know, DEVONtechnologies is working on a major new release of their information and document manager, DEVONthink. While the company still ships minor updates for all editions of DEVONthink and its little sibling DEVONnote, all really new functionality will supposedly appear in version 2.0. Again, we had the opportunity to talk to Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies, who shared some more details of the upcoming 2.0 release with us.

Besides introducing a completely overhauled database format that allows DEVONthink to open more than one database at a time, the new structure enables a number of other long-awaited functions. Such as real smart groups. Like in Apple Mail oder the Finder, smart groups in DEVONthink are saved searches that appear like folders but update automatically. So instead of manually replicating documents for a project one can now use a smart group that gathers all related information automatically. Or you can make a smart group that always lists the recently added stuff.

The way you search in DEVONthink will also change dramatically in version 2.0. DEVONthink inherits all the advanced search operators that some of you will already know from DEVONagent, DEVONtechnologies’ Internet search agent. So instead of choosing between somewhat obscure search modes you simply use boolean operators, parenthesis, and quotes. High-end operators such as NEAR help you search even more exact.

It seems this is going to me a truly interesting upgrade to the DEVONthink product line. We’re staying tuned and will talk to Eric again soon to tease a bit more out of him about what’s coming.

What you need to do is email Eric and explain why you would make a good Beta Tester.

They are interested in finding people with detailed knowledge of the application so the Beta can be really put through its paces.
