I mean no offence, but please enough with all this comparison and rhetoric with the War.
Yes it was a nice way for The Queen to sign off her speech to the Nation – We Will Meet Again, and for sure we should all download the Dame Vera Lynn and Katherine Jenkins version of the classic We’ll Meet Again when it is available (Saturday 11th April) with all proceeds going to the deserving (but let’s be honest underfunded and Government neglected) NHS.
It was bad enough the inane references to the War during the Brexit months (remember those) with a common argument of the remainers been that that we had won the war ….. with no thought to the fact that “we” defeated one nation with the help of the rest of Europe, the Commonwealth and America.
A combined and joint effort to defeat one threat ….. hold onto that thought!
Too young to have been effected by the war itself, but old enough to have relatives effected not only by the war but the after effects, I struggle to see any real similarities.
I get that the general message is one of being in it together, of a combined spirit and will to succeed but even then ….
The war had years of rationing during and after, we have had a little inconvenience due to idiotic panic buying that has pretty much sorted itself out (kudos to the Supermarkets and their suppliers) and certainly hasn’t seen anyone go without food because of COVID-19. You have seen the pictures of people waiting patiently in line with their ration books ….. compare that to the daily videos on social media of a selfish and greedy version of Supermarket Sweep.
The war had curfews, blackouts and bombings, we are only allowed out once a day to go for a stroll, enjoy a jog or go for a bike ride.
The war had a daily radio broadcast with the facts, we have 24/7 media hype and speculation as they continue to believe their job is to create the news, or be the news, rather than report the news.
To be fair we have social distancing, but the counter to this was being in a air raid bunker with other scared but stoic individuals not knowing if one would “have your name on it” or if you would have a home left to go back to.
The war saw children separated first from fathers sent to war, then from mothers as they were evacuated, we have children being home schooled by their parents who then take them for a walk, before settling down for evening in front of Netflix. (I accept ee do have children being separated from NHS and Essential Parents).
The war saw 449,700 killed, 67,100 of them civilians.
I get the intent with the references to the War but really, is what we are going through, and our rather embarrassing response any comparison. Doubt they sat in their air raid shelters year after year complaining of being bored.
Stay safe, be nice.
