COVID-19 Diary: Week Ten

As I write this Dominic Cummings is trying to dig himself out of a hole that he created, and in many way sums up the handling of the COVID-19 crisis: appalling leadership!

I don’t think anybody expected every decision to be correct, or every problem solved first time but what we were entitled to was decisive leadership, clear communication, and uniform treatment of non conformers.

To borrow the US baseball term: three strikes and you are out, so on your bike Boris and take Dismissive Dom with you.

Of course the fact that Cummings comes over as arrogant, dismissive, superior and detached from the usual social graces makes it hard not to want him to be sacked, but putting that to one side he has become the story, is distracting from the Governments ability to govern the country and as such is putting lives at risk, and potentially delaying further lifting of restrictions so he really has to go surely?

I have missed the last two Clap For Carers as have been on pet transports, but they had started to feel very orchestrated and manufactured so I am in support of this weeks been the last one. Maybe people can Boo for Boris, Grimace for Gove, Heave for Hancock, P*ss on Patel and as for Williamson ….. well that is best done in your own home whilst social distancing.

On the subject of the NHS surely we can now look to reform the way we allow people to use the service? Basically it is an insurance policy we all pay a premium for, so why can’t we have higher premiums for repeat users and excesses for repeat self imposed usage?

I have been driving round more over the last two weeks including Scotland, and the reality is that the vast majority seem to be observing Social Distancing guidelines, albeit it with some common sense thrown in: lots of doorstep and over the garden fence conversations and picnics. You will always get the two tails of the Normal Distribution curve: idiots and those that conform 100% and can’t understand the nuances that still retain safe social distancing, but the majority really can be trusted more than the Government are doing.

Personally not much has really changed. I am a tad bemused by those binge watching Netflix et al, or craving the pub, restaurant, sport etc. It will be nice to go to Live Events again in due course, but I am not a big watched of sport on TV so am not really engaged in the debate to bring back sport behind closed doors. My mental state will not be effected one bit either way.

Our days seem to fly by as usual: long walk in the morning with the dogs, some breakfast, potter around the house/garden, do a bit of “work”, some exercise, long lunch around 4pm, then some time with the animals, before an evening on the sofa reading, listening to music, watching TV.

Many are writing that it’s not the material things they are missing, more the people, and I get that. Whist I remain a pretty anti social person I am looking forward to more people coming round for a meal, drink, evening watching a movie. We already do this more than most I guess, but for us that will be the “norm” for the foreseeable ….

Stay Safe, Be Nice!
