With digital camera usage now established, the demand for easy, affordable photo editing tools has increased. Adobe’s Photoshop Elements leads the way as an affordable image editing tool. 40 Digital Photo Retouching Techniques with Photoshop Elements ($16.99) is an easy-to-follow, full-color guide shows all digital photographers how to make their photos look their best with dozens of well-organized, hands-on techniques. Readers learn how to change or replace a color, enhance faces, fix burred images, correct poor exposures, create a slide show, and more.
Thoughts and Impressions
I have reviewed 40 Digital Photography Techniques before and enjoyed the format and simplicity of the book, and I have the same feeling about this book. Sure, it is aimed at the Photoshop Elements user so has limited value in that respect, but as 40 ‘general’ techniques it is good. In reality the book uses Elements as a way of demonstrating the techniques, and I guess that is just a means of appealing to a wider audience than your full Photoshop user who will in all probability know most of this stuff anyway.
So that makes the ‘target’ audience those that are considering or have just entered the world of photo editing and are wondering where on earth to begin, and why they might want to edit their photos anyway. And for those people this is a great book. I would even suggest that for the more experienced editor there will be some useful reminders and new techniques, but beyond the competent user forget it – you will know everything that the book has to say.
The 40 technique are split into 6 chapters:
- Correcting Contrast
- Manipulating Colors
- Enhancing Portraits
- Editing Skills and Special Effects
- Very Special Effects
- Using and Sharing Images
A CD is included that includes a trial version of Photoshop Elements and 92 images to support the examples in the book, and overall is a solid little book that is as good as you are going to get for $16.99, and better than some that you will pay more for.

It’s a nice book. Certainly it wont make you a pro,but will benefit someone starting out.
There’ no magic book to become a pro(I’ve never seen any). There are a few videos out there, made by photo retouchers. However, best retouching techniques are usually closely guarded.

Yep, only way is to practice, but the book gives you some good ideas of what to practice which is great.
