6 of the best – a phrase that will bring back memories for a number of the UK readers I imagine!!!
A friend of Sands recently returned to live in the UK and left a bag of books for us to read/sell at on eof the many local books sales that they run in the pubs, or basically do as we wanted with.
I decided to treat it as a lucky dip!!! So far the 5 books that I have ‘dipped’ have all been really great. None of them are serious or meaningful books – all very simple summer reads:
Rogue Element by Terrence Strong is a ‘old school’ MI5 espionage thriller that moves at a fast pace with some great characters and a interesting plot twist.
Pleading Guilty by Scott Turow is a thriller set against a back drop of corporate law. Full of cliches but hard to put down.
L.U.C.I. In The Sky by Chris Fox is another fast paced thriller set around a futuristic war plane. Again a bit cliched but easy and fun to read.
The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum. You know the story!! I was surprised that I hadn’t read it and even more surprised how much I enjoyed it having watched the film many times. It certainly differs from the film on that basis is well worth a read if you haven’t done so yet.
A Bouquet Of Barbed Wire by Andrea Newman. Not a thriller but an old classic about a family and its various issues. Very enjoyable read, but more of a ‘girly read’ to be honest!
The Little Friend by Donna Tartt is one of Sands ‘serious’ books! It is pretty good, but I could only read it in short bursts and it is what I cal a very detailed book and I tend to prefer books that I can ‘skim read’. The critics say it will become a “special kind of classic” which probably says it all!!
