I think it would be somewhat naive and pointless of me to say anything about the technical content of the book. I think that it is fair to assume that the content is spot on. After all if you want a manual on your car you go to the people that built the car – ditto in this case. However the analogy is a little closer to the mark than you may think as this book has more than a sniff of the mechanic about it. Overall I felt it was a little too prescriptive and didn’t really engage me. In summary, it came over as a manual!
You will often hear a world class sportsman say that getting to Number 1 was the easy bit, staying there was hard, and I tend to get that impression about this book. It feels like it is going through the motions rather than striving to engage the reader.
It isn’t really possible to review this without mentioning the Adobe Photoshop CS3 one-on-one review that I did recently, not least because that book succeeded where this one failed. In my view one-on-one worked harder to engage me. It knew it wasn’t number one by default so it had to be more creative and push itself a little harder.
I can’t fault Classroom In A Book. It does a good job and it does it very well, but nor can I really warm to it.
