Could A New iPhone Be The Answer!!!

“It could only happen to me”. “You wont believe it but it is true!”. “Someone is trying to tell you something”

All of the above are relevant to this ‘news’. This morning, the day before the 3G iPhone is released (the phone I don’t want), I have gone and lost my Nokia N95!!!

I have been looking at the prices for the iPhone here in Spain, and think I have figured it out!!!

Naturally there are the two options – 8GB and 16GB, but only in black.

There are two data tariffs that are unique to the iPhone. For 15€ a month you get 200MB and for 25€ a month 1GB. That is on top of a monthly call/SMS tariff, and three of the five allow you the 15€ option and the other two 25€. All data tariffs are for 24 months and you get a subsidised handset depending on how big a tariff you commit to. If you follow that you will understand this:

Option 1 – 9€ calls/SMS + 15€ month data (200MB) you pay 259€ for the 8GB or 359€ for the 16GB
Option 2 – 20€ calls/SMS + 15€ month data (200MB) you pay 149€ for the 8GB or 209€ for the 16GB
Option 3 – 40€ calls/SMS + 15€ month data (200MB) you pay 49€ for the 8GB or 109€ for the 16GB
Option 3 – 60€ calls/SMS + 25€ month data (1GB) you pay 0€ for the 8GB or 59€ for the 16GB
Option 3 – 90€ calls/SMS + 25€ month data (1GB) you pay 0€ for either handset.

So that means that means the total cost of ownership over the 24 months is:

Option 1 835€ (8GB) 935€ (16GB)
Option 2 989€ (8GB) 1049€ (16GB)
Option 3 1389€ (8GB) 1429€ (16GB)
Option 4 2040€ (8GB) 2099 (16GB)
Option 5 2736€ (8GB) 2736€ (16GB)

Now my actual call and SMS usage is low, very low, at less than 15€ a month average. The only thing that I will really use the data for is QIK video streaming, the odd email, and (assuming it works) sticking the SIM card into my unlocked USB Modem for (very) occasional Internet access on the MacBookPro.

On the basis that QIK is available on the iPhone now, it looks probably that I will go with Option 3 on the 16GB iPhone.

There is only one place that I can get one locally and that is 30km away, so I reckon I will try and call them in the morning and see if they have any in and how quick they are selling.

So much for the 95% eh!!!! And god help me if the N95 turns up on Saturday if I have just bought a iPhone!!!!!

As for the old iPhone – Sands will take that and at the very least use it as a iPod (her Nano has actually just packed up) and PDA (replace her Palm T3) and maybe as a phone.

Hah! I knew you’d cave. Just needed a little help to get you there.

I see not only Canadian iPhone provider is telling it’s users to bend over and grab their ankles. At least you do have an option of getting the iphone for free. Here you have to sign a 3 year contract for every iphone.
I’m hoping that there will be hack for v2 software, so I can upgrade my old iphone and still use it as a pay per use device.

Certainly not good, but I reckon a refection of the culture here – I just don’t see that many people needing or wanting to be online all their life!!!!

Snicker, snicker… 😉 (Allison and Tim will laugh and laugh…)

Of course the really interesting thing will be taking my existing iPhone that is jailbroken on v1.0.2 and restoring it, updating it to v2.0 and then jailbreaking it again for Sands as it seems that it is already possible to Jailbreak 2.0

Yeah right – cheers!!! Are you on v1.02 as well?????

I think I may let you go first on this one my friend!!!!!

Called into the local store in El Ejido – no iPhones despite saying that they did in the Movistar web site!!! Seems that the iPhone is only available in Madrid on launch day. 5 people called into the store while we were there (sorting out a replacement SIM). Have my name down for a 16GB when they come in (no idea when) but the prices above only relate to new contracts so I have to get a new number or pay 322€ plus use 23.500 of my Movistar points which is total madness.

Checked out the N95 – would cost me 170€ on a 60€ a month contract so iPhone works out cheaper!!!!

Oh you poor soul. I feel so sorry for you…. then again maybe not really 🙂
I thought that because of the new iphone there would be a slew of the old ones available on the net. Did some searching, and so far did not find a lot. Or should I say, not at the prices I’m willing to pay.

You are better of selling the old iPhone. I saw one go for $400 – guess people afraid there wont be any hacked ones around now all have to be activated in store

the iphone may be cheaper but you’ve been saying for months that the n95 is far better. Why not get another one or perhaps something similar.

By the way, how did you manage to lose a phone???

Good question – no idea where I lost it. It seems that I must have put it in my shorts pocket (which would be a first) and then it dropped out when I was on the Harley. I lost my keys that way yesterday as well, but a guy in the street found them and flagged me down when I was returning. In a way that makes it more weird as I would have thought phone and keys would have been in same pocket – maybe he decided to keep the phone.

It is really weird as there is something nagging away at the back of my mind that says I have put it down somewhere!!!!

I still prefer the N95 but if you recall I said a while ago that I needed a data plan (currently paying as I go for that) and they are crap here in Spain. I thought they would have to bring a better one out for the iPhone and they have (still not great) but it is only available for iPhone customers. My original post said that I could imagine buying the iPhone (subsidised) just to get the data plan, and I would use the N95 still. That is probably what I would have done up until yesterday but now to buy the iPhone (to get the plan) and the N95 is a little excessive.

As I will have a spare SIM card though (my current one) I am going to wait and see if the N95 turns up, or I can buy a cheap one second hand in a month or so.

Makes sense to me anyway 🙂

That sounds like a fine excuse for you to visit all the bars around the marina… Mmm? 😉

    I wish!!!!

The sequence of events went something like this. I picked the phone up off my desk and sent a text saying I was ‘on my way’.

I rode the Harley to the marina, never got off it, picked my friend up, and rode back to the Apt. 2 hours later I went to take him back to the marina, went to pick up my phone and couldn’t find it …..

Now if I had left in a bar (again) I would understand (and probably get it back) but the above is a mystery!!! That is why I am wondering if I put it down in the apartment somewhere, but that doesn’t explain why it wasn’t ringing when I rang it.

Looks like the TOTAL Apple cock up made its way over to Madrid as well 🙂 I am a LOT happier now!!!!!

I’m here in Madrid, trying to activate three iPhone 3G that my dad and my brother have managed to score today. This is the 1,254 times (combined) that we have tried to activate it since we got them about six hours ago, and still no result, even leaving our iPhone connected. Update: One has been activated.
