Have just done an interview with Eric from DEVON technologies for Tim’s show this weekend. He was telling me about some of the stuff that will be in 2.0:
“At the moment, DEVONtechnologies is heavily working on the long-promised version 2.0 of the DEVONthink product line. Quite a few features scheduled for 2.0 have already been delivered in 1.x such as Spotlight compatibility, but many other features that involved major changes of the database structure had been shifted until this major overhaul and are now taking shape. Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies, shares some information about what is coming with us.
The most prominent change in DEVONthink Pro 2.0 will be the possibility to open multiple databases at the same time. In recent versions you had to close one database to open another. Version 2 will open multiple databases next to each other so that you can easily exchange documents between them. A global GTD-style inbox will make quickly adding information to DEVONthink even easier and you can then file the documents into the right database later.
In addition, all document will be stored as-is, Word documents are no longer converted to RTF before they’re imported into the database. Any document can also be opened externally in a suitable application and will be re-indexed when it is saved to disk. Text and rich text files can, of course, still be directly edited within the database. DEVONthink 2.0 will support a much larger range of file formats by using QuickLook, integrating your Microsoft Office or Apple iWork files will be no more complicated than drag-and-drop.”

Can’t wait. I’m using it right now on a daily basis, and it’s one of the best tools on my mac. If only I could have better remote access to my data. The webserver part is a bit limited. Would be nice to be able to navigate through the database, instead of just searching it.
Something tells me you wont be disappointed, and yes you can get an early look at it 🙂
Can I? Gimme gimme gimme 🙂
Now Now patience my friend :p
I hope that the internal bundle format would store a hierarchy of folders (with aliases) instead of a flat “Files” folder inside the db package. Why? So that I can make the hierarchy of folders indexable from outside DEVONthink.
For instance, I use Leap (for speed/launch reasons) to grab the files and I’d like to auto-tag files created/managed in DEVONthink. Right now that’s not possible since if I overwrite files (add/delete in DEVONthink), the tags are crushed. If I had a hierarchy of folders, then I could auto-tag based on folders.
I’ve been using Devonthink for years and love it. I just wish the iOS version had a little more feature-parity with the Mac version. Hard to believe it’s been almost 4 years since version 2 was creating so much anticipation!
