Google launches Chrome themes

With computer users spending ever longer periods of time online, themes are a popular way of customising the look and feel of the browser window.

Chrome’s new theme gallery has 29 templates to choose from at launch, though Google say more will be added. Other web browsers also offer a selection of themes, with Firefox users able to pick from a library of more than 20,000 customised skins.

Available themes include Corkboard, which gives the browser window a textured, corklike feel; Legal Pad, a garish yellow with horizontal stripes; and Pencil Sketch, which lends Chrome a hand-drawn look.

Users can apply the theme to their browser by choosing a design from the Google gallery and clicking to add it to Chrome. The theme will download and users must select “open” in the download manager pane at the bottom of their browser window to change the appearance of Chrome. Users can switch between themes and the default view at any time by selecting the relevant option under the “Personal Stuff” link in the Preferences menu.

Google’s web browser currently holds a 2.6 per cent share of the global browser market, according to recent figures from Net Applications, making it the fourth most popular web browser behind Safari, which has a four per cent share, Firefox, with a 22.5 per cent share, and Internet Explorer, which enjoys a 67.7 per cent market share across all versions.
