With the news that the iPhone Dev Team have jailbroken 2.0 my plans are a little clearer!
As I understand it the current position is that the Pwange Tool 2.0 will unlock a 3G phone but not allow it to use a wireless carrier other than the official Apple one. I am not 100% sure what they mean by that. I am assuming it means you can’t use it with a SIM card from another carrier at the moment?
There is still no sign of the iPhone outside of Madrid though, and I am resigned to the fact that it could be at least two, probably four weeks before they arrive in El Ejido (no reason for that timeframe – just a gut feel!), but when they do I know I will need to jailbreak the 3G iPhone in order to run QIK on it – although no sign of when that will be released out of invite alpha either at the moment. As I am going to be using the SIM card that comes with it no real problem with it being ‘locked’ to the network (if that is the case) but at some stage it would be good to have it unlocked for travel etc.
Anyway the more exciting stuff is with my current unlocked iPhone that is still running v 1.0.2. I have never tried to restore and upgrade it before because I have never wanted to risk losing the functionality of it being unlocked, or had any need for any of the later releases features. That is not the case now though as Sands will be using the iPhone and not only will need it to be unlocked nut will also need it to be on 2.0 so that she can use QIK as well if necessary. I also want her to have access to the applications so she can get more use out of it.
So how do I restore and then upgrade and then jailbreak the current iPhone?
My Digital Life have a useful guide which I think will work, but if you have a better suggestion please feel free to pass it on,
1. Turn off iPhone – Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the red slider. Ignore this step if your iPhone is already off.
2. Press and hold down the Home button for about 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with a text which says Please Connect to iTunes appears.
3. Plug the iPhone into Mac or Windows PC. Release the button if you haven’t.
4. Run and open iTunes if it’s not already opened yet.
5. iTunes will prompt a message that says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.
6. You will be taken to the iPhone pane. Hold down the Options key (in Mac) or Shift key (in Windows) and then click on Restore (note that when the button should be pressed until Restore is clicked).
7. Step above will open up a window to allow you to select the firmware software file you would like to use to restore to iPhone. Browse through the folders (Located in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates in Mac OS machine), and select the old firmware file named as iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw.
8. Wait for the full restoration process to complete, and the iPhone will be restored to state based on firmware 1.0.2, rather than performing the default action to automatically updating the phone to the newer 1.1.1 when you restore using iTunes.
That should give me a restored iPhone, that I can then let iTunes upgrade to 2.0. It will then need to be jailbroken.
Now if the AppleInsider article is correct although the latest ‘hack’ wont unlock a 3G iPhone it will unlock an original phone. Again, anyone got any views or experience of this?
I have just bought on eBay a replacement for the N95, so once this arrives I reckon I will be having a go at the above as I need to make sure that I have phone that I can use!!! Worst case I guess is that I end up with a brick of an iPhone that will just have to be used as a iPod Touch. Hopefully it wont come to that!!!!!

Once I get my iphone…. should be here tomorrow, according to the tracking site, I’ll be hacking away at it,and see what I can come up with.
Well I have heard from someone that has upgraded a jailbroken 1.1.4 by running the upgrade to 2.0 in iTunes and then using the above to jailbreak it again so in theory it is pretty easy!!!
I spoke to Movistar today – they have no idea when the 3G will be available locally. I am going to wait for the replacement N95 to turn up and use that as my phone and then sort out the current iPhone for Sands so let me know how you get on …..
So are you back to your original way of thinking, that is not to get the new iPhone?
Nope 🙂
Sands is happy (ish) with the old iPhone. She isn’t a big fan but can see the benefits, and in particular likes the apps (eWallet, Evernote in particular).
My replacement N95 turned up today and it is good to have one back for the modem, QIK etc etc but I really like the iPhone apps to be honest, so I am still going to get the 3G when it is available. It is still the best option for online 3G contract (unique to iPhone here in Spain) and so I am going to give it a go!
