I followed the keynote on macrumours’ site. It was really good as it refreshed itself with the new lines of text. plus photos.

The macbook air looks great until you think about what you get. I checked it out on Apple’s website. The 1.8Ghz machine with the flash HD is over $3000. That is more than the 17″ macbook pro. Who are they trying to kid?? The basic machine is to drool over but at a price. It is a ‘so near yet so far’ thing. I was looking for a replacement for my 12″powerbook only to find that it is less powerful than a basic macbook plus the expense and bulk of an external dvd drive. Only one usb port and no firewire…

Who will buy the Macbook air? ( by the way what a stupid & crappy name)

Fanboys, fanboys , oh and some fanboys will probably buy it

Must confess I didn’t follow it this year! I had assumed before hand that there would be no ‘amazing’ new announcements, that the MBA would be expensive, under powered, not of any interest to me or the ‘mass’ market, but look great.

    I was right 🙂

I also expected all the ‘lifestyle’ content stuff that is all excellent if you need that sort of thing. I don’t but HD film rental may get a try out.

Time Capsual seems a bit of over marketing hype? Not sure as haven’t looked in any detail but it isn’t exactly pushing the boundaries of technology 🙂

I think Jeremy has it spot on… It looks like Apple have seriously mis-interpreted their market with the MacBook Air.

Personally, I was hoping for an affordable accompaniment to my desktop machine. Something light, small and low-end that I could show photos off on to family and friends, take on holiday to check email, use instant messaging software whilst out of the office etc etc. They are right in that it doesn’t necessarily need an optical drive, but they’ve got the design and more importantly the price point all wrong.

At over £1100 for the base model, who would feel happy slinging that it to a backpack for a trip? They seem to be making a big deal about the thinness of the model (in fact my friends and I are already calling it the MacBook Ryvita) but in reality wouldn’t something thicker in height and smaller in screen size have been better for mobile lap top users?

Having said that, I love the way the iTunes / AppleTV Movie concept is developing and a friend of mine is already seeing the benefits of the update to his iPhone with regards the maps triangulation.

Why didn’t I break this essay down into smaller posts, then I could have made a move on the posting chart. Chris, can you change it to words typed instead of posts added?

An affordable companion to your desktop machine with those functions sounds a lot like either the new iPod touch or the MacBook. You’ve also got to accept that any new device that is so radically different is going to cost more simply for R&D.

My wife, she wants the Air. Why? She HATES lugging the iBook everywhere she goes, yet she has to. The only thing that I’m really not to keen over is the lack of a gig Ethernet adapter.I don’t think that Apple has just casually made this thing without a little bit of research. I say don’t judge it until you’ve actually held it in your hands and seeing whether or not it is right for you. But that’s just me. 🙂

The Time Capsule is the only thing I thought was iffy. I don’t think that the average consumer is going to pony up the cash for something that is not going to be immediately satisfying. I mean, it doesn’t really do anything, and it doesn’t give you any satisfaction, until you need it. I think that as a replacement for the Airpot Extreme, yah, I can see that. Other than that, why doesn’t Apple just make the current Time Machine work with current AE’s that have a disk hooked up to them?!

I ordered my Touch yesterday. I was hoping for a memory boost, but the ability to mail, etc. is pretty cool. So I saved $20 by waiting. Meh.

AppleTV is another thing that everyone thought was a no-hitter. But it’s shaping up and going down in price! I will get one, eventually. There’s that whole HDTV thing in my way. To have every major studio on board is…well, major! It doesn’t do DVR, and they haven’t upped the Gigs, but I like it.

And really, aren’t we all a bit of a fanboy? (Or we wouldn’t be here and actually commenting!)

  5. Mac Sokulski

Well I must say, that I wasn’t very impressed with the keynote announcements. MBA in my mind is a total miss. Yes it’s thin and light, but missing a lot of components. Where is the user replaceable battery, memory which is less then 2gb, because it shares it with the video card, and you can’t upgrade it. No firewire or ethernet…. wireless is good, but not for transferring files on a network. Price is another point. 1800 for the base unit is a bit much…. and please some one explain to me why is this notebook more expensive in Canada??
The Touch updates are a welcome addition, and the $20 I had to pay to get them…. I can live with that. Update to AppleTV looks promising…. but it hasn’t come down the pipe yet, so I can’t say anything about it. Movie rentals are a good step. I find that I would rather rent a movie, then own it. There is only a very select number of movies that one can watch over and over again, and still enjoy it. So renting a movie, when you got all the major studios behind it at the same price you get a dvd from a local rental place is a good thing. Giving the ability to renters to watch that movie on a computer, then appletv then ipod is a very very good thing.
Overall nothing overly exciting, but then again, can we expect Apple to wow us every time?

  6. jeremy

@ Wayne, even you have reservations in spite of your positive remarks about the ‘Air’. It is ultra-portable but what can it do? That is an aweful lot of wonga for such a basic device. I agree with you to an extent about the time capsule. It would have been good if they’d have enabled our Airports to do the same. This is the third version of the Extreme in a year, what happened to R&D? Could they not have got it right in the first place?

@ Mac, why is it more expensive in canada? Hello! have you seen what we have to pay in the UK and continental Europe? We get ripped off for everything from Apple. That is the same for you too. Apple does it because they can!

As regards the other announcements, most of them were software upgrades to existing products. The apple tv is still a damp squib, the iPhone is still a phone (when do you not know where you are???) and the ipod touch though a nice bit of kit is still somewhat crippled. Why would they charge you for a software update? That is a disgrace.

  7. Mac Sokulski

    @Jeremy
I’ll just shut up about Canadian prices then…. what they are doing in UK is highway robbery in broad daylight!! I’m not even including the VAT.
Some prices are very close, but the differences on the MBA are crazy!!!
Sorry Jeremy for my ego-canadian view. You have my sympathies.

  8. Wayne LeFevre

@Mac – How much is the Air in Canada. I do agree that Europe gets the shaft, especially with the exchange rates. (And the fact that it all gets shipped from China anyway! It does have a bit further to go, I guess.)

It is true that I have doubts against the Air. It seems to have a niche market, though. Sony has pretty much had a good lock on it, but even Dell has a little one. I love the multi–touch, though. But, it’s also $700 more than the MacBook. That could buy a nice case, a Time Capsule and an Apple TV!

@Jeremy – agreed on the AE. I’ve got the first version, and kicking myself ever since the second. (Not enough to warrant buying, however!) Wouldn’t mind the third, though only 2 out of the 5 computers in the house could take total advantage, though. 2 running Tiger and 1 Sony Vaio Laptop.

The charge for the update is pretty ridiculous.

  9. Mac Sokulski

    @Wayne
The basic model is $100 more than in the US, and high end one is $150 more. Not a whole lot, but then again, the exchange rate is almost at par right now. I’m not including taxes, since they are subjecive to different areas.

  10. Chris Marshall Post author

Careful guys they will defrock you of your FanBoy badges 🙂 Good to see that your time contributing to the site has got you thinking like grumpy old me!

I disagree about the AppleTV as I really rate it. Needs much larger drive and ability to hook up to external drives.

The iPhone continues to dissapoint but watch for a seperate post on that.

  11. Mac Sokulski

Bah…. thay can take my badge, but stay away from my macs 🙂
Also after listening to all the podcast coverage from the keynote, makes me really sad. Why are these people so appologetic for Apple? It seems like if Mr. Jobs told them that he is raising prices on everything, they would take it, swallow it, smile and try to convince the world that it was the best thing. Scary, very very scary. Then follows the obligatory comments on how Mr. Jobs looked on stage… was he paler than usual, happier, indifferent? Who cares!!! I better go to sleep… before I really loose it….

  12. jeremy

Wayne, like you I have the first pre-gigabit version. Not that I’ve ever used the Lan port but the idea that they should have had it that way in the first place annoys me. They seem to have the habit of releasing products which are not quite right for no apparent reason.

  13. jeremy

hey Chris, that seems to be a contradiction. You really rate the Apple TV but find two obvious large flaws in it’s design. It is another crippled product! Glad you appreciate our grumpiness though 🙂

  14. Chris Marshall Post author

Well sort of, but I did vote in in my Top 5 purchases of last year. Flaws or not I still find it really useful, and if they sorted those two issues out it would be even better.

  15. Wayne LeFevre

@Jeremy – Actually, I’ve had to buy a 8 port gigabit switch because of the lack of the gigabit version. Glad I did, though, because I’m actually running out of room! I could use a few more. Anyone want to buy an Airport Extreme?

Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges! (Sorry, references to badges has to be followed by the preceding statement. I think it’s the law. 😉 ) I’m not particularly apologetic for Apple, it’s just that at least they seem like they are trying. Maybe it’s just me and growing up in this timeframe. It’s like, we had next to nothing, and now look at everything we have! Except, I guess that as long as I see a tech boom, I want it all!

    Now!

And where are our flying cars?!

    Whew. OK, better.

  16. Mac Sokulski

I don’t see appletv as being crippled. It has some short comings, but once you get used to them, they are really minor. I must agree that the 40gb version is really a joke in terms of hd size. Right now with the movie rentals I don’t see why you would need a drive more than 160gb. My cd library takes only about 40gb, and pictures take another 18gb. I do not sync my movies, because I would run out of space, so I stream them from another mac. It would be nice if it had some sort of optical drive for those once in a while DVD moments. In my opinion it will never become a PVR or DVR. That would directly compete with the rental business. Even with it’s short comings, it’s still better than any windows media center pc, and cheaper (much cheaper) too. Now with the new update it’s a stand-alone box, which is even better.

  17. jeremy

When I say ‘crippled’ I mean in the sense that it should have that usb port function available, and as you said, a larger hard drive. Maybe I’d consider getting one then. The price here is £199 inc VAT. That is about $320 plus tax for the 40 Gig model! That is $90 more than in the usa!

Another example of Apple’s spoiling the ship but for a hap’orth o’ tar, is the aforementioned Airport Extreme. In addition to the comments we’ve made, why does it not have an audio output like it’s little brother?

@ Wayne I wish I’d thought of that Blazing Saddles quote first. You are quality 😀

  18. Gary

I quite like the look of the Time Capsule. I recently returned a brand new 500GB drive (bought specifically for Time Machine) to Amazon when it blew its external PSU five minutes after first plugging it in and have not yet re-spent the money. So that’s roughly half the cost of the Time Capsule. The balance could be justified mainly by giving me three gigabit LAN ports to extend the existing “network infrastructure” 🙂 in my flat. The USB printer port option could well come in useful in the medium term too.
