I just came across these pictures of the (lack of) crowds outside the Apple and Carphonewarehouse stores in the UK. I also had an IM from Darren earlier who had just been to the Regent Street store and seen all of 10 people outside, 2 of which where policeman!!
I have to say that I am not surprised as anybody that has heard me on the MacReviewCast will know
My place of work is just a short distance from the Glasgow Apple Store (Buchanan Street) and, with just a slight detour, I can pass it on the way down to get my train home. I left the office at 6pm and passed the store at approximately 6:06pm. I estimate that there were about 60 people still queuing outside. Knowing the size of the store, there were probably that many more inside. I didn’t hang about.
When I passed this morning on my way to work, there were four, maybe five, guys already queuing. The guy at the front was in a folding chair and had a laptop on his knees. All were “older” guys. None of them were teenagers or “young adults”. I don’t know if any of them had been there overnight.
Sleeping on the streets of Glasgow with a Notebook would surely be in the Top 10 all time dangerous things to do 🙂
Not too surprised about this.
Unfortunately I couldnt get to a launch event (on stage as some of you will know) but at 9am tomorrow I will be outside a carphone warehouse 😀
Quite a scrum in Manchester earlier today, see pix at – http://gallery.mac.com/donmc123#100049 .
….. and around 2,000 odd people outside the Apple Regent Street store by 5pm this eve – http://www.edparsons.com/?p=567
Couldn’t help noticing that the ‘picture post’ that was written by one of Carphonewarehouse’s competitors…..
🙂
I heard that the crowds had built up 🙂 I think the main point was that Apple and the press had said all week it was going to be ‘just like’ America with people camping out over night.
The bug bearer for me is when America assumes everyone else wants to be like them and to follow them so I tend to get a bit intransient when they take that attitude and I love it when they are shown up!

Am sure we will hear all about it very soon then 🙂
Called the local O2 store today at 4pm and they had plenty of stock, as did the local Carphone Warehouse. On asking the sales assistant at the O2 store, he described the last 2 days as ‘Steady but not OTT’.
Interesting. Danny said that when he picked his up this morning there were two people in total buying an iPhone.
Seems like no one really rushed, but the launch was busy, and now the initial fan boys have bought their bragging rights it has all died down very quickly!
