Our First Attempt To Make Bread

Last night we tried to make bread for the first time! I say make in that loose 21st century use of the word i.e. we bought a bread mix and borrowed a bread maker from a friend.

Only two ingredients involved: water and the flour mix. Only one action required: poor the water then the flour mix into the bread tin inside the bread maker, select the program and press start.

3 hours and 40 minutes later this is what we got:

Bread

Oh dear!! Tastes pretty good, but looks pretty flat!

A concave loaf!! I am pretty sure that at some stage in the process I saw that that dough had risen, but it certainly hadn’t by the time the loaf was baked. To be fair it actually tastes pretty good, and we think we know what we have done wrong …… used cold water rater than luke warm water.

Of course Sands is now off researching which bread maker we are going to buy, which is a little premeture and weird in my opinion as a) I have a slight intolerance to bread and if I eat to much go all chesty, and b) Sands doesn’t really like to eat that much bread. Still it could be fun, and she seems to favour the Panasonic SD255 Breadmaker with Raisin/Nut Dispenser or the Panasonic SD254 Breadmaker, which her sister recommends and used to use before she started making bread by hand …. now that is worrying!!!

For now though I am trying to work my way through the brick loaf that we made last night. Any suggestions on which Bread Maker to buy would be appreciated!

  4. @SparklyGlasses

it’s possible that u got an old mix or bad mix. Also water temp matters for the yeast. I would try again. 2nd time’s the charm

No bread machines and mixes 1st ;)And making bread is a bit like riding a bicycle. It just takes practice!

  6. @Dozeymagz

Same thing happened on my first attempt! Think it was a combo of using the wrong oil and water was too warm 🙂

Tesco offers a superb range of ready baked stuff! 😉

my first bread ever was so bad the dogs wouldn’t eat it! Now I use a bread machine…the only way I get lucky!

I find the bread maker is great for mixing but I prefer to bake in the oven , better crust and the smell is great 🙂

It doesn’t look too bad. I’ve never used a bread machine, just make bread from scratch. I love the process of kneading the dough and letting it rise. Either way you make it, there’s nothing like the aroma of freshly baked bread in the house . . . love it.

The smell is great. Always reminds me of the ‘trick’ to selling a house etc, always have the smell of fresh bread and coffee in the air 🙂

  13. @taluta

cant read link on my mobile, but I make bread often, what happened?

  14. @chirpycat

Looks a bit heavy. my daughter bakes bread & other items for a local restaurant/bakery. One I luv is Rosemary raisin bread.

On ave 2lbs of flour will rise with abt 10g (roughly 3level tspns) yeast mixed w/1-2cups warm water & a tblsp of sugar.

Flour is all diff so it absorbs water differently too. If too sticky add more flour etc & knead til dough is silky is NB

LOL no def not expert, just done it many times. Good luck 4 next time, few things nicer than fresh h/made bread 🙂

I bought a Zojirushi. It is ranked high and it works great! I would stay away from mix and use yeast. Mix can be old. G luck

  19. @CherylAClements

Well at least yours tasted ok. My first attempt at bread making (I went the traditional way) turned out harder than a brick.

Should have tried selling the recipe to the Building Industry I might have made a fortune if it didn’t rain !

  20. @tinaTubs

i use a panasonic bread maker no packets they never work and allisons yeast only

  21. @Llawen

Make nearly all my own bread in breadmaker. Best kitchen gadget I’ve ever had. And my lovely Dad bought it for me.

  22. @bswain

lol I bought a breadmaker, perfect bread every time without the effort!!

  23. @ScotRadcliffe

I blame the yeast. Could be out of date, or could just be not enough yeast.

  24. @moonelighte

2probs- mix has dead yeast. Why bread machine? Get ingred. includ. fresh yeast, give it a go by hand! Great fun to kneed!Relax

  25. @EntrepeneurADD

My first attempt making bread (without a bread maker) yielded 6 very dense bricks that I couldn’t cut. Never tried again 🙂

  26. @bevashwell
