Training Update

Things have sort of ground to a bit of a halt recently. I have got up to 10km and can do that reasonably comfortably. Sure it is tough, and it hurts like hell towards the end, but I recover quickly and when I set off I ‘know’ I can do it.

The problem still seems to be my calves and feet. Maybe it is partly due to the fact that I am sitting down at the computer a lot (like 8 – 10 hours a day at times) but my feet are swelling up, and my calves have a pretty much permanent ache. Funny thing is when I am running they feel fine and when I get back from running my feet are back to normal. Same is true with my feet when I lie on the sofa with my feet up.

I am not sure what is causing this or what is the best thing to do about it? I think I am going to take a few more days off running to give my legs a chance to recover from any muscle fatigue as that could be part of it, and then I am going to go for a few bike rides before I start running again. I need to spend less time at my desk I guess, or as I am now, type away with my feet up – the benefit of a wireless keyboard and a big computer screen!!

I also want to keep a close eye on my diet. I have tended to eat more bread and ‘crunch’ bars recently, so am going to cut back on the bread and cut out the crunch bars. Alcohol is a no no for at least a couple of weeks as well.

More water needs to be consumed and I am going to try and eat a couple of bananas a day, despite the fact that I don’t like them.

Hopefully this will sort itself out soon, otherwise it is going to be a uncomfortable 6 weeks until I get the run over with!!!

    Had a similar problem with permenant pain in my right calf when I started back up – really odd in that fine when running, except on a steep hill, but during the day very painful. Was around for several weeks.

    I got hold of some of the cold gel (opposite of deep heat!) and massaged hard at the site of the pain. Whether this helped or not but it’s now gone.

    Dunks – that may help. Would help for sure if I knew this was a muscle issue rather than a dehydration type issue, but will give it a go.

    Seems to be getting a bit better after a few days rest and making sure I don’t sit for too long at one time at the Mac.

    @Mac – yep!!!!
