I have my 3G iPhone ‘hacked’ as I need to use QIK on it a lot for the Almerimar Life site. The first generation iPhone that Sands uses used to be jailbroken when I had it as that was the only way that I could use it in Spain but we haven’t bothered with the fact that we can’t use them abroad with a different SIM card, basically as neither of us have been away since the summer!!
Sands will be in the UK for sure next year, and my parents are considering a Pay & Go iPhone from O2 in the UK when they get back, and they plan to be in Spain a lot more next year, and although I would love not to have to travel in 2009 it is probably that I will have to.
So it was interesting to watch the video of the unlock that is scheduled to be made available on the 31st December 2008. I will be ‘breaking’ both our phones, but maybe not until the New Year is seen is as I can imagine a lot of bricked iPhones on the busiest SMS night of the year.
Will you be unlocking your iPhone?

I too unlocked a gen 1 iphone bought from the states for use in the UK last year. I bought the 3g iphone on July 11th, but as yet haven’t jailbroke it.
I don’t want to use QIK, but would quite like the modem tethering software installed. My worry is though, that I will use all the “history” on the phone , such as sms info etc. Is that the case? Or does it save it?
When I jailbroke my 3G iPhone it saved everything. Basically the process with Pwnage is that it makes a back up of your iPhone and uses that backup to restore after the jailbreak.
Looks like the unlock will be a straight download from Cydia, which I guess means that I will need to upgrade and jailbreak to 2.2 first!
